The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday acquitted the young Christian girl, Rimsha Masih, who was accused in August of burning pages of the Qur'an, and faced blasphemy charges that could have carried a life sentence in prison (AP, CNN, BBC, ET/AFP, Guardian, Dawn, The News). Reports that Rimsha is mentally handicapped sparked international outcry over her case, and in September, the imam who had accused Rimsha was himself accused of fabricating evidence against her.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has approved the execution of more than 10 prisoners "accused of heavy crimes such as rape and murder," the presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi said on Monday (AFP). The executions are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, and could take the lives of 22 convicted prisoners over the next few days.
