Pakistan unfriends Facebook

By Saba Imtiaz, May 19, 2010 Share

Over the past four years or so, Pakistanis have become addicted to Facebook. The social networking website is home to local celebrities, including former President Pervez Musharraf, who recenctly began using the website as a way to update his "fans" about his speaking engagements and his new political party. It has spawned a culture of its own -- fashion designers and musicians use Facebook as a marketing tool, tagging pictures is a full-time activity, and local telecom operators have used Facebook's mobile services as a selling point. After former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated and curiosity about her children grew, British tabloids published images of her son, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, that were taken from his Facebook page. Pakistani grandparents use Facebook as a way to communicate with grandchildren living outside Pakistan, and the five Americans who were arrested on suspicion of involvement in terrorism last year reportedly used it to try and get in touch with militant groups.

But all that has come to an end -- until May 31, at least. Earlier today, the Lahore High Court ordered that access to Facebook be blocked in Pakistan. The move came after a petition was filed in the court by a forum of Islamic lawyers protesting a Facebook page called "Everybody Draw Mohammad Day," which began as a protest itself against a radical group which had objected to a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed on the animated U.S. television program South Park. Facebook users in Pakistan had campaigned on the social networking website to "report" the page to Facebook authorities, but no action was taken.

Not surprisingly, Pakistanis across Pakistan have protested against Facebook. Pakistan sees protests on a daily basis against issues ranging from the electricity crisis to mass layoffs to Aafia Siddiqui's case.

While one Indian Twitter user joked that the difference between Jamaat-ud-Dawa and Facebook in Pakistan was that the front group for the militant organization Lashkar-e-Taiba is banned, it highlighted Pakistan's ironic tendency to act only when it comes to blasphemous content and not content that affects the state's security. Hateful and derogatory literature is available openly in Pakistan, and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has not attempted to block YouTube channels such as that of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or videos of hate-laden speeches by Jaish-e-Muhammad leader Masood Azhar. Objectionable content is available on scores of different websites. Facebook was not the first to be blocked in Pakistan. What might be next?

Pakistan has an unfortunate history of blocking websites it believes are objectionable for blasphemy reasons. In 2006, Blogger.com and all blogspot.com addresses were blocked in Pakistan in the wake of the Danish cartoons controversy. Since the cartoon images had been posted on blogs hosted by Blogger, the entire website was pulled down for at least two months.

This February, YouTube was temporarily blocked for almost an hour. Once service had been restored, Internet users in Pakistan discovered that the video that had been blocked was of President Asif Ali Zardari allegedly screaming "shut up" to someone while addressing a crowd.

Ever-enterprising Pakistanis will undoubtedly find a way around the Facebook ban. When blogspot.com was blocked, a rerouting address was created for blogs hosted on the website. At least this time, Pakistan's ban did not affect the website in question the world over. In 2008, a Pakistani government attempt to block YouTube caused hours of downtime for YouTube users around the globe.

The new Facebook ban reflects the laws of Pakistan, where blasphemy is punishable by death or life imprisonment. But it also leads me to question the sense of a legal system that ordered an entire website blocked for the content of one page and points to the inanity of those who believe blocking the website in Pakistan will somehow stop would-be cartoonists. I also have to ask what this judgment will do to the morale of the thousands of young students who in 2007 mobilized to campaign for the restoration of Pakistan's judiciary and organized protests of then-President Musharraf's imposition of emergency rule -- using Facebook.

like you said...

"The new Facebook ban reflects the laws of Pakistan."

The Lahore High Court duly upheld § 295-C of the Criminal Code, having within the Judicial Body's purview under articles 31 and 33 of the Constitution, sufficient authority to judge on this matter.

The rest is just commentary on what we think about it. And sensible people can disagree as to whether this is a necessary function of a Judiciary of a Muslim Majority nation in the 21st Century.

I mean if you look at it, this is precisely what secular-minded people should applaud. The rule of law, and resorting to the Justice system to redress perceived wrongs.

I'll take civil methods like this over the burning of the Danish embassy (ironically to demonstrate the Muhammad was NOT a violent person), anyday.

Good for Pakistanis.

Good for Pakistanis? Are you serious?

My sarcasm detector is a little off this morning, because I haven't had my coffee yet, but I'm really hoping this was meant to be tounge in cheek. "...sensible people can disagree as to whether this is a necessary function of a Judiciary of a Muslim Majority nation in the 21st Century." Would you be saying the same thing if we were talking about the cutting off of hands? open air executions? violent subjagation of women?

couple of remarks.

First of all that radical group did not objected to South Park's depiction of prophet, it threatened. There is a large difference between the two .
Secondly, like the commentator before me said Pakistan is an Islamic country, it is a country whose law is guided by sharia. § 295 of Criminal Code of Pakistan forbids damaging or defiling a place of worship or a sacred object. § 295-A forbids outraging religious feelings and prohibits the use of any derogatory remark or representation in respect of Muslim holy personages § 295-B forbids defiling the Quran .. And the § 295-C forbids defaming Prophet Mohammed. Defaming Prophet Mohammed merits death with or without a fine. If a charge is laid under § 295-C, the trial must take place in a Court of Session with a Muslim judge presiding. Which, in this particular case, the muslim lawyers guided by laws of sharia did. Of course one have to ask why ban the whole Facebook instead of a certain page of it, but I guess that all Facebook is responsible for one page of it. According to Pakistani law and many, many protesters.
Lastly , I wonder what says the rest of the slogan on the photo. What they, the protesters, want to do with Facebook? Somehow it ..........got cut.

Islamic State

I actually think it is within the rights of the Pakistani State to ban web pages that insult and denounce Islam. Whether we like it or not, Pakistani is an Islamic state, not a secular one. The basic tenants and founding principles of the country as based in Islam. What then, is surprising, when the state decides to ban a page that blatantly insults and decries it's foundation?

Granted, the facebook group, in theory, was intended to demonstrate and 'celebrate' freedom of speech. In practice, however, it has turned into a playground for xenophobic and islamaphobic comments and rhetoric. If anyone has actually had a look at the page, there are drawings that include a depiction of someone - lets say, relieving - themselves upon the 'prophet'. There is another that depicts the 'prophet' wearing a bomb in his turban.

Yes, freedom of expression is well and good. But so is the freedom for an Islamic state to deny access to a website (in this case facebook) that allows blatant and hateful attacks on its very foundations.

Like I say, fact is, Pakistan is an Islamic State. Disallowing access to material such as this should not come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the basic tenants of Islam and Pakistan. If Pakistanis have a problem with this, by all means organize a political movement to separate Pakistan from its religious ties. DO something. DO something, other than whining because your country finally stoof up for itself.

Why must we do the work for the Allah?

We say that Allah is almighty and can do any and everything. Yet we behave as if HE is weak.
If the Lord of the Universe feel that Islam has been insulted he will punish those responsible by taking away their lives in a second. HE would send an electric charge through the internet and fry the computers of those who came up with the stupid "Draw Muhammad Day" and send a million volts through their blasphemous bodies. But strangely HE does nothing. So I guess WE have to pass laws and punish people seeing HE is not doing his job. I get very angry when I hear people say that Islam has been insulted. ISLAM IS and nothing anyone says or does can change that. Islam is not in need of praise and will not change because of insult. It is eternal. Why do we go berserk because of perceived insults to our religion and we do not demonstrate at the desecration of our Muslim brothers being killed while praying in the masjid? Why do we not demonstrate when our mothers and sisters are bombed and killed in the bazaars? MY family is scattered all over the world, and Facebook was a wonderful way to keep in touch with them. Know what was happening in their lives, share in their joys and sorrows. Banning Facebook just makes no sense to me. It is throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

It is very logical to ban facebook

I don't know why western countries can not let Muslims to stay peaceful with religion. Religion is very basic and personal freedom and the so called civilized nations don't know how to respect religious value of Muslims. banning of facebook is a beginning and a peaceful protest of Muslims of Pakistan against shameful act supported by facebook. hurting other person religious values can be a great disaster because people are very sensitive and emotional towards religion. and by doing this shameful act western countries want some more act of violence from Muslims and maybe another incident of terrorism can happen. and After that incident western countries rush towards Muslim countries blaming them for fundamentalism. I think every Muslim or at least Pakistani should understand our point of view and should have deep understanding of things ... thanks for reading and understanding ...

Its sad tht instead of raising awareness about the said group deeply hurting muslims, instead appreciating thousands of muslims campaigning peacefully on facebook, requesting the administration to take notice , you have made the easy route of critisizing Pakistan
Saba I am sure that you would know almost all moderate Paksitanis are deeply hurt by this controversy, they are not taking to the streets, they are not burning effigies , all they are doing is spreading the word to stay away from facebook as a protest and being deeply hurt it is our right to block anything in our country that we do not like.

Facebook has double standards

Look man, every nation has right to stop anything it dislikes. Why the facebook insisting to make caricatures ? I come to know that facebook has a rule that if 30,000 people request facebook to stop some particular thread or event, it gets blocked by facebook. But, in case of caricature, look at the officials. One of the officials confirmed me that there are more than 50,000 people demanding that this must be stopped. But Its not. Then I ask myself asked them why you are violating your own rules. He says we need to “Guarantee” freedom of speech.
Bullshit !

well i have a bit different view

Well saba i read your artical it was good well written and i read what ali hussain wrote .First of all the ban on the facebook is justified from one point and from other it is not .if facebook was to be banned only because some one had a page of those picture created by the monster.and if the governemnt feared that i was might give access to those fools in pakistan who want to see those pics then i think entire internet search enignes like yahoo google should be banned because that access to those picture couldnt not be stoped only by blocking facebook and youtube.if government wanted to give a strong message in this case that the govenment would not tolrate such kinda behaviour then they should have kicked out the ambassador of that country and start a social and economical ban or boycot with them but i think this ruling was just to let muslims take their anger out on streets and on stages and when they are cool till the time of 31 may the gora saab can countinue their work gora saab bhee kush and muslims are cool down because they didnt want what happened during mushraaf time when muslims of pakistan on the whole came to know about those pictures.so banning one facebook is just stupidity but one side of me says that ban is justifiyed and should be for life time untill facebook authorities agrees to stop their double standerd policies on one hand if u make a page about hollowcast they block that page so i doubt where they said to our offical its freedom of speech so we cant stop that user so when it comes to hollowcast they take action at as soon as they can so it mean they support those pictures indirectly .so in such case its right thing to do,in that case government shouldnt ban the site for few days it should be for as long as they officaly prove that they are not going to let such thing happen.

Politics in the name of Islam

I remember the days when General Musharaf overthrew the government of President Nawaz Sharif and became the new head of the state. There was a complete blackout of the only available tv channel for almost 5 hours and then suddenly a guy declared martial law on the country. Similarly this whole matter of blocking a few good communication sites is strictly political and has nothing to do with Islam. The blockage of facebook and youtube is just another cowardly attempt of the current Zardari government to put an end to our struggle for rights.

Pakistan's Islamic fundamentalist society

The very fact that Pakistan’s democratic government has to ban face book over ‘everybody draw Mohammed’ page lays lie to the claim by Western and American apologists of Pakistan that ’Majority of Pakistanis are moderate Muslims’.

As much as these apologists try to ignore, fact remains that overwhelming majority of Pakistani citizens are fundamentalist Islamists and would rather follow Mohammed’s medieval sermons than present-day democratic principals.

No wonder that Pakistan’s democratic government under Benazir Bhutto of its own free will facilitated relocation of Osama bin Laden from Sudan to Afghanistan in 1996.

No wonder Pakistani Army and Intelligence created, supported and assisted Taliban movement to install a fundamentalist Islamic government in 1996 Afghanistan with the full blessings and financing by Pakistan’s democratic government.

No wonder Musharraf played the duplicitous game of ‘running with the hares while hunting with the hounds’ with the Bush administration after Richard Armitage forced him to join US fight against Taliban against Musharraf’s own will, since Musharraf’s own Pakistani Army had created Taliban to begin with.

Provocation

This is a reaction to death threasts issued for a pair of cartoonists who wanted to draw the profit Mohammed. No one has th right to threaten the life of another for a simple drawing. When drawings of Jesus, Joseph smith, or Abraham have been produced by these same cartoonists there was not such a violent outcry from those offended. They chose not to watch the program they spoke out about it but they did not threaten violence. So this is a reaction to Muslims trying to violate the rights of all people on the Earth. All people have the freedom of speech no one can take that a away for any reason.

Saba which world are you living in woman?

Saba your comments and general idea of portraying the pessimistic side of pakistanis and muslims in general forces me to believe that you dont fit in this place, creed or religion. You are not only ill informed, which i doubt you are, you`re merely playing the ` i know it all` card which people stung by inferiority complex and self rejection generally have. Wakey wakey woman watch your words here what do u think ur comparing and who do u think you`re talking about here? Some self styled extremist groups which mostly are created by a group of foreign intelligence agencies with our beloved Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) ?
Saba you should quit this job and start working as a waitress, you know why? Poll says waitresses generally talk alot about stuff they have no clue about, all they want is the tip that people leave for them. Well i dont have any interests whose giving you those tips but you better talk some sense and relate real issues with real facts because you`re not writing some story tale here...we all know whats going on in the real world and we can relate to that ourself.
Now being a muslim which i seriously doubt you are NOT and having the power to write which again i have serious doubts you lack, what did you do when that Denmark incident happened? What are you here for? to criticize any muslim who still has the least level of eiman left and objects on any depiction of our beloved Prophet(P.B.U.H) and arguer over freedom of speech? Is that the best you can do Saba? I normally read through articles and flip them over but your lack of understanding of whats really going on in this world, your ignorant and immature attitude forced be to let you know that pakistanis are not that lame and numb. We might have the worst rulers from the past decade or two, we`re not the best ones around in the materialistic world, but lady i assure you we do hold a strong level of eiman in our hearts. We dont do much about it but that doesnt mean we start critisizing the few good ppl around us who have done so. Get a life Sana, i really pity you not having one.

Very Well Said KHWAJA HAIDER,

Today i am really proud of being a Pakistani, today we showed the real face of Pakistan. Pakistan was made in the name of ISLAM, in the name of Allah and in the name of Prophet Muhammad SA.
and Today i understand why Pakistan stands firm against all the inside and outside evils, whether it be Corruption of our own people, Injustice prevailing all around, or the war raged against us by world powers. I have no doubt that this act of us (Pakistanis) must be loved by Allah and inshaAllah HE will protects us from the sufferings.
the creation of Pakistan was a miracle and so is its existence (when all the guns are towards this country).
This is the answer why miracles happened to us.
Today i feel proud of every Pakistani who stands for the name of Prophet SA.
and off course shame for people like the author of this article. and want to tell you miss Saba that people like you and the people who perform such ugly acts could not achieve anything except DISGRACE as this is Allah's commandment that,

"Only the enemies of Muhammad will remain without any name"

Civilised behaviour???

It is not matter of senses but already hurt sentiments of Muslims.
A proper genocide of Muslims is being done in Iraq,Afghanistan and Pakistan and by creating such mockery like moves the so called civilized Americans are just adding salts in inflicted wounds of Muslims.
Well informed western people are quite aware of present status of Muslims.
did Muslims ever attack on religious icons of Jews and Christians during this war on terror who are started by pure Christians.
Nobody bother to dig that who runs facebook but now relgious identities are being scanned to project this issue as part of explotiation of muslims sentiments and financial gains of few.

Pakistan courts under legal laws have taken appropriate steps to curtail down the incoming after effects due to careless attitude of people belong to liberal culture.
Yes we agree Americans become very comfortable in exercising their right of using of freedom of speech but that kind of speech can create violence in under developed areas where the soldiers of the US army are also dying under the reason of religious extremism.

not a complete solution yet a step towards it!

well first of all i hope the writer of this article is seriously thinking abt the waitress job, it should suit her better.

Mr. Muhammad Bilal , u have a beautiful name and i hope u know after whom u have been named. Now abt ur question, is banning facebook our solution? well if its not the complete solution it is a step forward as it has send a clear message to the world that we, the muslims, will not tolerate slightest insult of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and that we love Him more than our parents, brothers, sisters, children and any thing in this universe and whatelse this ban has done is that world's view that insulting person's family is not indemnified under "freedom of expression" but insulting religion or prophet is, had been rectified and even the girl who actually gave the idea of this stupid event has apologized and that too on the pretext that she didnt know muslims feel so highly abt the Phophet Muhammad (PBUH).

And if after banning facebook its administration does not take appropriate action, Pakistan shall call OIC meeting to have a conensus in muslim world as to how to go abt the issue and thereafter go to U.N and make them define the meaning and scope of the term "freedom of expression" so that a line can be drawn as to where a persons freedom of speech ends and were the nose of another start.so, eventually, this event has actually united muslilms around the world who had been divied by these powers by calling them moderate or fundamental muslims and now we have a great opportunity to establish our identity and worth not as a moderate or fundamental but just muslim.

and i would also like to answer a few who say u should just ignore whatever they are saying, well how abt someone say stuff abt ur sister or mother or daughter in front of ppl would u still let them? just think abt it.

Today after reading all the coments on this article i feel proud to be born and brought up in Pakistan.

Hey MR. Listen We Muslims have a huge belief in our Ideology, similar to the Americans, we all are equal.. Its not always the Americans but we have also been defamed many times e.g. We have also suffered from the Taliban attacks many times and have lost great amount of lives of our dear ones. Where do we stand? where is the concept of justice and equality now? Do you have any answer to that? No....
Everybody knows what the Americans think of us Muslims, its a clear picture, they don't consider us worthy for anything. Take the example of foreign Pakistani students who are mis-treated due to their distinct culture and religion. Well this is another debate.. I dont want to go into further details but the point is that the way you are trying to interpret and cover the deeds of the Americans, cannot be justified that easily... And the way you are saying death to all idiots shows that you care for the Americans. So i dont think that i need to give you any example for how much we care about our Religion, Ideology and most improtantly our Prophet Muhhamad (sallallah -hu- Alaihe wasalam)......

@Ahmad

And what of American Muslims?

That's the thing. You speak of Americans as if there is only one type of American: the Fox watchin', gun totin', red neck bigot that thumps his bible while proclaiming that America is the end-all-be-all of human civilization.

You forget that this is a country in which 8 million Muslims worship freely. And with due respect, I have never seen nor heard Pakistani Students or ANY Muslim student being mistreated because of their professed creed.

On the other hand, I HAVE seen multiple Pakistani exchange students here on American funded scholarships who come to this country to reap the benefits of its higher education and research institutes, and then go back to benefit their homeland.

If you've got a problem with the business end of American foreign policy, than say that. Don't rail against innocent Americans whose only real sin is not knowing or caring enough to learn the realities of the world, and what the other end of America's flawed foreign policies feels like to those lucky people who receive American benevolence in the guise of clusterbombs, threats of invasion, and US made weaponry in the hands of their tyrants.

And speaking as an American and a Muslim, I take serious offense to my religion being called 'an ideology,' akin to any other ideology like fascism, Kemalism, or Libertarianism. Islam is so much more than that.

Does one allow guests who mock us at our backs

Does one allow guests who mock us on our face and at our backs;

Facebook is such a guest; an uninvited guest which makes derogatory and disparaging comments about Muslims whilst singling out Muslims; very similar to most large American or Western newspapers and related TV channels.

The correct word that describes Facebook and other large American or Western newspapers and related TV channels is blatant racism.
